"Panic swept through the streets as another powerful earthquake shook a Sumatran town today.
The quake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale hit at 1:30 am (0330 AEST) today, with its epicentre estimated off the coast about 100 km south-west of the Sumatran town of Padang, the Hong Kong observatory said.
An earlier quake hit yesterday near Siberut Island, 109 km south-west of Painan, a neighbouring town to Padang, causing panic among residents fearful of another tsunami.
The tremors come two weeks after a massive 8.7 earthquake centred on the same Indian Ocean geological faultline killed more than 600 people as scores of concrete buildings collapsed on the Indonesian island of Nias.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
Eppy Saputre, 32, from Padang told smh.com.au: "It was not that heavy a quake but it made people really worried - maybe the trauma of the latest quake (on March 28)," he said.
Mr Saputre, who works for Sumatran Surfariis, said there were traffic jams in the streets as people tried to flee the city for higher ground.
"Padang is something like an empty town now because everyone moved out last night. Everyone is just so scared" he said.
He said he stayed in Padang but went away from all the buildings to find a safe place.
Mr Saputre said he had not seen any damaged buildings or heard any reports of injuries in Padang.
The duty seismologist at Geoscience Australia, Cvetan Sinadinovski, said the Padang area would have felt the quake at an intensity of around 5 or 6 on the Richter scale.
"Earthquakes of 6 or more are capable of structural damage to the buildings in the epicentre area," Mr Sinadinovski said.
He said the 1989 Newcastle earthquake was 5.6, causing building damage and killing 13 people.
The duty seismologist said the earthquake had the potential to cause localised water disturbances but Australia's nearest tidal gauge at Cocos Islands had not registered any "abnormal water increases".
The region has experienced a further eight tremors since the initial 6.8 quake, the largest being 6.4.
A deadly earthquake last December generated a massive tidal wake that killed about 273,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean.
Meanwhile, a strong earthquake measuring magnitude 6.1 jolted Tokyo today, but no tsunami warning was issued, public broadcaster NHK reported. There were no immediate reports of serious damage but NHK said two runways at Narita International Airport near Tokyo were closed for checks.NHK said the focus of the quake was about 60km below the earth's surface in north east Chiba, outside of Tokyo."
O texto é do Sidney Morning Herald, que eu assino on-line. E achei bem mal escrito... Mas o importante é que isso confirma minha tese de que aquele povo lá é a reencarnação de todo o mal já criado no mundo.
Tenho pena, mas deve ser verdade...
